Why did the US sell out the SDF?

22 Ocak 2026 Perşembe

PKK leader Murat Karayılan asks the quartet of the US, UK, France and Germany: "What happened that you left your ally to face such an attack?"

The answer was given clearly that same evening by Tom Barrack, the US Ambassador to Ankara and Special Representative for Syria: "The rationale for the US-SDG partnership has changed. The SDG is no longer our primary partner against ISIS." Thus, the US signalled that it would work with Sharar, in whom it had been investing for some time, as the "main actor".

From the perspective of imperialism, the question now is: Will the US want the SDF to be completely phased out through "individual integration," or will it maintain a presence centred on Qamishli in case it regains "use value"?

The king and pawn relationship

This is imperialism: it uses and discards. One of the people in our country who best understood this reality was Hrant Dink. Dink had warned Kurdish representatives about this several times. For example, in a speech he gave at the Malatya Businessmen's Association on 25 April 2006, Dink warned, "In the past, the Armenian people trusted the imperialists, but they were mistaken. Today, the Kurds are experiencing the same thing." He added: "That's America. It comes, does its own thing, looks after its own interests, and when it's done, it leaves."

Twenty years have passed, and Karayılan is complaining about the quartet of the US, Britain, France and Germany: "These states are only looking after their own interests. The promises made mean nothing."

What did you expect? That imperialist states would defend the interests of the Kurds? The US looks after its own interests, using the Kurds, Turks and Arabs against each other for its own gain.

That is why, as a "Turkish citizen of Kurdish origin," I have been trying to explain for years that it is not in the interests of the Kurds to work for the Americans, but to unite with the peoples of the region where they live.

The issue of the front against Iran

The answer to the Kurds' question, "Why did the US sell us out?", lies in the three separate meetings Trump held with Erdoğan, Netanyahu and Sharar.

The US wants to build a new order in our region under Israeli hegemony. According to Washington, the backbone of this new order will be the "front against Iran". This explains why US Ambassador Tom Barrack has said several times, "You will see, Israel and Turkey will cooperate from the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean."

Syria is the model for this new order. Since Assad's overthrow, the US has pursued a strategy that prevents Syria from falling under Iranian influence and guarantees its normalisation with Israel. To this end, it gave credit to Assad. Shara used this credit to gain power in Damascus.

As for how this plays out in practice, how it is reflected on the ground...

The Paris agreement

On 6 January, the US had Israeli and Syrian delegations sign an agreement in Paris. With this agreement, the two countries established a "joint communication mechanism".

This mechanism, centred on the US, will normalise the Damascus-Tel Aviv partnership by acting as an intelligence and security mechanism to combat "Iranian influence".

The Paris agreement is also an agreement between the US and Israel to pave the way for Shara to advance against the SDF.

How can the US front be blocked?

It is time to forget the BOP script. As stated above, the US's main policy in the region now is to establish a broad front against Iran, which includes Israel. The US has made an agreement to integrate Turkey and the PKK, and Syria and the SDF, into its systems as needed for the front against Iran. That is the opening.

In this way, the US seeks to bring Turkey and Syria, Turks and Arabs, side by side with Israel in a front against Iran.

So, will the US not consider the Kurds in such a front at all?

US Ambassador Barrack's gathering of Mesud Barzani and Neçirvan Barzani of the KDP, Mazlum Abdi and Ilham Amed of the SDF, and ENKS leaders in Syria in Erbil on 17 January, leaving Kandil out, is another sign of the new era.

We will discuss these at length. But the main issue we must all focus on now is this: How can the US front against Iran be prevented?

If the US front cannot be prevented, a more painful period may begin for all peoples.
