The following message, shared by US President Donald Trump on social media, is a concrete sign that, alongside its hegemony, US diplomacy is also weakening: “Iran does not know how to sign a nuclear disarmament agreement.”

This message is also an expression of Washington’s helplessness. Why?

Because Iran signed the agreement in 2015

Because Iran signed the nuclear agreement with the US in 2015. The agreement, signed during Barack Obama’s presidency, essentially involved the lifting of sanctions in exchange for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme. 

To be specific: Iran’s uranium enrichment level was capped at 3.67 per cent. (Given that the level required for a nuclear weapon is 90 per cent, it is clear what a significant gain this was for the US.) Furthermore, the stockpile of enriched uranium was limited to 300 kg. The number of centrifuges was reduced. It was agreed that the underground Fordo facility would be taken out of production and converted into a research centre. 

So what happened next? When Trump became president, he unilaterally withdrew from that agreement signed by Obama in 2018! Now, however, he is sending the message that ‘Iran does not know how to sign a nuclear disarmament agreement’… 

Trump’s Dilemma

Trump is in a tight spot. He cannot restart the war with Iran, nor can he force Iran to the negotiating table on his own terms. Because of this dilemma, Trump keeps extending the ceasefire…

Of course, this could also be a tactic to buy time for the US to prepare for a new wave of attacks. But ultimately, a new US attack seems unlikely to alter the overall picture. For the Iranian people are maintaining their unity and resolve to resist, and Iran’s missiles retain their capacity to respond…

US intelligence preparing for withdrawal

This report by Reuters, citing US officials, suggests that Washington may withdraw from the conflict: According to the report, the US intelligence community is analysing what reactions Iran might mount should Trump unilaterally declare victory. 

According to Reuters, if Trump were to declare victory and withdraw his troops from the region, Tehran could turn this scenario around and claim it as its own victory. This is precisely what the intelligence community is working on to counter… 

Iran has pulled that tooth

So, is there a situation that would allow Trump to achieve a unilateral victory? No. 

On the contrary, as we examined in our previous article titled ‘The Seven Effects of the Hormuz War’, the US’s political losses are at a strategic level… 

US intelligence is, in short, working on how to turn such a dire situation to its advantage. They are actually working on how to propagate a ‘false victory’ that will spread from the US to the Atlantic and from there to the world…
