The Greenland and NATO reality
The Trump administration has declared a new Monroe Doctrine in order to close off the Western Hemisphere to China. Although the main reason for wanting to take over Greenland, located in the northernmost part of the region, is China and then Russia, the issue is turning into a US-EU problem, even a crisis within NATO. This is because Greenland, which the US wants to take over, is Danish territory, and Denmark is both an EU and NATO member.
The American order
The imperialist US attacking Venezuela and kidnapping President Maduro, saying "give me Greenland or I'll take it by force", trying to seize the Panama Canal, wanting to make Canada its 51st state, is seen as a kind of "the US destroying the order it created". With this difference:
In fact, the "American order" was also somewhat like this: The American order was the US attacking from Vietnam to Afghanistan, from Iraq to Libya; the American order was staging coups in countries from South America to the Middle East; the American order was assassinating politicians in many countries around the world...
Trump's operations in Venezuela and Greenland, however, are attacks aimed at sitting on the remnants of the disintegrating order. Therefore, we can also interpret these moves, in the words of my senior colleague Hasan Bögün, as "the US's demand for a new division of the spoils."
The US's efforts towards a new order
As US hegemony grew, the "American order" operations had a positive effect on the US's allies. However, as US hegemony declined, the "new order operations to protect what remains of the American order and demand a new division" began to directly target US allies. This is what the Greenland crisis is all about.
The power struggle of the future is in the Arctic Ocean. Melting glaciers are revealing new reserves. The region contains rare elements needed for new technology. Furthermore, the emerging northern route is shorter and more economical, making the Arctic significant.
For this reason, imperialist America wants to take over Greenland and is trying to justify this by saying that "Chinese and Russian ships around Greenland are unacceptable".
America is the boss of NATO
Trump has now turned this into an open threat: "We need Greenland. It is vital for American interests. If they don't give it to us nicely, I will destroy Denmark's economy."
Faced with this threat to her country's territory, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reminds us that Denmark is a NATO country, saying, "If the US attacks another NATO country, NATO is finished," summarising by referring to Articles 4 and 5...
However, the real truth that NATO members fail to grasp is this: those articles work if the US wants them to, and the US is NATO's boss. Stephen Miller, Trump's Deputy Policy and Homeland Security Advisor, reminds all NATO members of this by wagging his finger at Denmark: "Greenland will be America's, and no one will fight the US over it."
That is why the "Joint Statement on Greenland" signed by the leaders of France, Germany, Britain, Italy, Spain and Denmark cannot openly warn the US.
NATO is not a shield
As can be seen, the neo-Nazi Trump is now seeking to invade the gardens of his "allies"!
For years, we have been saying that the source of threats against Turkey is imperialist America, explaining why we oppose NATO. The argument of some of our intellectuals with a security bureaucracy background who saw this threat was "to be protected from America by staying in NATO".
We tried to explain that NATO is not a club of equals. We pointed out that the US's operations to destroy the Turkish economy revealed that NATO was not a shield.
This is where we are now: it should be clear by now that NATO democracy only extends as far as the US and that NATO will not shield its members from the US...
