Özgür Özel’s statement on Instagram ban

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel spoke about the censorship applied to Instagram and the access issues on the AYM site.

After his party's hazelnut rally in Giresun, Özel answered journalists' questions on current issues.

Özel described the situation as both a global and national absurdity. "The global absurdity is the restriction by Facebook's parent company on posts related to Haniyeh. The national absurdity is the complete shutdown of Instagram as a protest," he said.

Özel stated that the decisions were unacceptable. "For a service provider to restrict freedoms in such a social media environment to protect its own country's interests or when its country is criticized is like cutting the branch you are sitting on," he said.

"In the elections, we will rid ourselves of this mentality. Together, we will block the current government. The Constitutional Court annulled the article outlining what the Communications Directorate could do following our party's appeal.

We said the Communications Directorate could not be the head of censorship. Today, it was annulled. What is happening today are things that should not happen in any country."
