Azerbaijan and Armenia set for peace talks in Germany

Baerbock plans to meet with Azerbaijan's Jeyhun Bayramov and Armenia's Ararat Mirzoyan individually before the trilateral talks commence. She is slated to make a statement at the start of the discussions.

This meeting follows discussions between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz earlier in the month during the Munich Security Conference, where they agreed to reinitiate the peace process.

Tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia have been high since 1991 due to the Armenian military's occupation of Karabakh region—a territory internationally recognized as Azerbaijani—and seven surrounding regions, including Kalbajar.

In the fall of 2020, Azerbaijan reclaimed much of the region in a conflict that concluded with a peace deal mediated by Russia, paving the way for normalization efforts.

Last September, Baku launched an anti-terrorist operation in Karabakh to reestablish constitutional order, leading to the surrender of illegal separatist forces in the area.
