Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler's critical message on Syria: Withdrawal conditions clarified
Turkish Defense Minister Yaşar Güler provided significant insights into the ongoing "normalization" process between Turkiye and Syria, stating that meetings involving ministers could be held at mutually agreed locations.
In an interview with British news agency Reuters, Minister Güler shared important messages regarding Turkiye's engagement with Syria.
Minister Güler mentioned that, similar to previous discussions held in Moscow, "meetings involving ministers could be organized at mutually agreed locations" to further the dialogue with Syria.
Addressing one of the key demands from the Syrian government— the withdrawal of Turkish Armed Forces from Syria—Güler stated, "Turkiye will only consider coordinating its withdrawal from Syria after a new constitution is adopted, elections are held, and borders are secured."
'Our Priority is NATO'
Minister Yaşar Güler also emphasized that while Turkiye is interested in enhancing its relations with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), its primary focus remains fulfilling its responsibilities within NATO. Güler stated, "Our priority is to fulfill our responsibilities within NATO as a key ally and to strengthen solidarity with our allies. Our focus is on ensuring that NATO remains prepared, determined, and strong."
F-16 Deal Progressing Smoothly
Güler expressed satisfaction with Turkiye's agreement with the U.S. for the procurement of Block-70 F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits, noting that the process is progressing as planned. "We hope to complete the project without any issues until the final aircraft is delivered," Güler said, adding that officials from both NATO allies continue to discuss the details of the agreement.
