Tensions rise in the Eastern Mediterranean: US deploys another aircraft carrier
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has announced the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier to join the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Eastern Mediterranean, under the area of responsibility of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). Additionally, the USS Georgia guided-missile submarine will also be deployed to the region.

The United States has decided to bolster its military presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Secretary Austin made the decision to send the USS Abraham Lincoln to accompany the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which is already operating in the area.
In a statement from the Pentagon, it was highlighted that the USS Abraham Lincoln is equipped with F-35C fighter jets.
The statement continued, "Secretary Austin reiterated the U.S. commitment to taking all necessary steps to defend Israel and noted that in light of escalating regional tensions, U.S. military posture and capabilities in the Middle East are being strengthened. Reinforcing this commitment, Secretary Austin has ordered the accelerated deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln, equipped with F-35C fighter jets, to the CENTCOM area of responsibility, adding to the capabilities already provided by the USS Theodore Roosevelt."
The Pentagon also announced that the USS Georgia guided-missile submarine would be sent to the region for operations.
Roosevelt Replaced Eisenhower
Following the escalation that began on October 7, the Pentagon first deployed the USS Dwight Eisenhower aircraft carrier to the Eastern Mediterranean. After several months, the Eisenhower left the region and was replaced by the Roosevelt.
Until now, only one aircraft carrier was operating in the region. With Austin’s decision, there will now be two aircraft carriers operating in the CENTCOM area.
