U.S. Congress eyes TikTok ban or forced sale
The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce plans to vote on a bill requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok within six months or face a ban.
This step signifies a major push toward regulating the app, which boasts about 170 million users in the U.S.
The legislation, introduced by Representatives Mike Gallagher and Raja Krishnamoorthi, targets national security concerns linked to TikTok's Chinese ownership. It proposes prohibiting major app stores from distributing TikTok if ByteDance fails to divest in time.
