Ukraine should have strong military with European support, Germany’s Scholz says
Ukraine should have strong armed forces with European support to secure its independence, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday.
“We must ensure that Ukraine does not have to accept a dictated peace. It should be fair, just peace that guarantees the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine,” Scholz told reporters in Brussels.
Pointing to changes in US foreign policy, Scholz said European leaders will discuss during their summit today ways to boost European defense capabilities and sustain financial and military support for Ukraine amid the ongoing Moscow-Kyiv war.
“For us the most important thing is that Ukraine remains a sovereign, independent, democratic nation — this will be a task we must devote ourselves to,” Scholz said, emphasizing the importance of Ukraine's military strength and security guarantees.
“We must ensure that Ukraine has a strong national defense and military. It cannot achieve this alone — that is very clear. That is why support from Ukraine's European friends within the EU, along with other allies in Europe and NATO, and transatlantic partners will continue to be central even in times of peace,” he added.
