Turkish Cypriot, Greek Cypriot leaders hold talks in buffer zone
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Tufan Erhurman and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Hristodulidis met Monday in the UN-controlled buffer zone in Cyprus for talks hosted by the UN’s top representative on the island.
The closed-door meeting, held at the residence of UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus Khassim Diagne, lasted around 90 minutes and took place in a “positive atmosphere,” according to a UN statement.
The two leaders held a “fruitful discussion,” exchanging views on substantive issues as well as the way forward in the Cyprus process, the statement read.
They welcomed the UN secretary-general’s continued commitment to the Cyprus issue and reiterated their readiness to support his efforts, it added.
According to the UN, Erhurman and Hristodulidis agreed to meet again by the end of April with the aim of making more specific announcements.
No joint press statement was issued following the meeting.
