Statue of former British King George V beheaded

Attacks on colonial monuments in Victoria state in southeastern Australia continue.

Most recently, a memorial statue of former British King George V was decapitated and red paint was thrown at it.

The police made a statement regarding the condition of the statue in the Kings Domain on Linlithgow Street in Melbourne.

“It appears that the statue has been decapitated and red paint has been thrown at the monument,” police said.

Victoria and many other states in Australia took a public holiday today to celebrate King Charles' birthday.

Other statues targeted by protesters this year include the statue of Captain James Cook, which was cut off at the ankles before being toppled in Fitzroy Gardens near the cottage named after the explorer in central Melbourne on February 27.

Another statue of Captain Cook on St Kilda's Jacka Avenue was also cut off at the ankles the day before Australia Day. On the same day, the statue of Queen Victoria in Queen Victoria Gardens near the city was covered in red paint and graffiti.

Another monument to Captain Cook in Edinburgh Gardens in Fitzroy was found broken and covered in graffiti over the Australia Day long weekend.
