North Korea fires dozen ballistic missiles toward East Sea: South Korea
North Korea fired around a dozen short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, on Thursday, the South Korean army said, according to local media.
The missiles were launched from the Wonsan area, with further analysis of their flight distances and other specifications underway, Seoul-based Yonhap News reported, citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The army said it had stepped up surveillance and remained vigilant against any potential additional launches while maintaining a robust defense posture through close information-sharing with the US and Japan related to the latest missile launch.
Earlier, Tokyo said that Pyongyang fired "what may be a ballistic missile," according to the Japanese Defense Ministry.
Japan's Coast Guard urged ships to monitor further information and avoid approaching any fallen objects, Tokyo-based Kyodo News reported.
The latest launch came after North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area toward the East Sea on Oct. 12.
