Iranian president, Pakistan army chief stress stronger cooperation, regional security in Islamabad meeting
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Pakistan's Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir emphasized the need to expand bilateral cooperation and strengthen regional security during a meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday.
According to Iran's official news agency IRNA, the two sides reviewed the course of political, security and defense cooperation between their countries and underscored the importance of enhancing bilateral coordination, particularly in the security field.
The meeting took place shortly after Pezeshkian arrived in the Pakistani capital as part of an official visit.
IRNA reported that Munir was accompanied by Lt. Gen. Asim Malik, Pakistan's national security adviser and director general of military intelligence. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iran's ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, also attended the meeting.
Pezeshkian arrived in Islamabad earlier Tuesday and was received by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The visit comes days after Iran and the US began implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a Pakistan-mediated framework aimed at ending the war and addressing outstanding disputes through negotiations.
On Sunday, Qatar and Pakistan released a joint statement following the conclusion of US-Iran talks at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland, saying the parties had agreed to establish a "de-confliction cell" involving the US, Iran and Lebanon — facilitated by the two mediators — to ensure adherence to the cessation of military operations in Lebanon under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
Iran and the US announced on June 14 that they had reached a 14-point understanding mediated by Pakistan, aimed at ending the war and addressing outstanding disputes through dialogue and negotiations.
The memorandum, known as the Islamabad Understanding, entered into force on June 18 after being electronically signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump.
The agreement includes provisions related to ending the war, including in Lebanon, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting the US naval blockade imposed on Iran.
