Hungary rejects EU plan to allocate billions for Ukraine arms supplies
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Monday that his country will not support the EU’s plan to allocate billions of euros for arms supplies to Ukraine.
"We will not agree to the payment of tens of billions of euros for arms supplies," Szijjarto wrote on Facebook ahead of an EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels.
EU countries are planning a military aid package of at least €6 billion for Ukraine to strengthen Kyiv's strategic position ahead of US-led negotiations with Russia.
"For three years we have been resisting pressure, for three years we have refused to be pushed into their war policy, now we will endure it!" Szijjarto said.
He also criticized efforts by "pro-war European liberals" to obstruct US-Russia peace negotiations, which he described as essential to ending the war.
"It is in our fundamental interest that these negotiations should succeed. That is why we will do everything we can to ensure that Brussels and the pro-war Europeans cannot block a peace agreement between the US and Russia," he said.
Addressing Hungary’s security concerns, Szijjarto said: "When it comes to security guarantees, we will not ask the question of what security guarantees Ukraine needs, but what security guarantees we Hungarians need."
He acknowledged that the Brussels meeting would be difficult, saying: "It will be a bruising day," but stressed that Hungary would not withdraw from its stance.
