China sentences former military industry worker to life imprisonment in espionage case
China said Saturday that a former employee of the military industry was sentenced to life in prison in an espionage case, according to media reports.
The convict identified only as Wei, was a former employee of a research institute operating under a Chinese military industry group. Wei was charged with stealing and selling core secrets in technological research and development and practical application of key sectors, said the Global Times newspaper.
Wei allegedly was recruited by a foreign spy agency and sold more than 1,000 documents to foreign agencies, including six classified and 536 secret-level documents on key areas of technological research and practical application.
Separately, Taiwan detained a former assistant of the current head of the National Security Council, who is former Foreign Minister Joseph Wu, in connection to an espionage case, state-run Focus Taiwan reported Saturday.
Ho Jen-chieh was detained Thursday.
The former aide allegedly leaked information to China.
The Taiwanese case also involves other high-profile suspects like Wu Shang-yu, advisor to current Taiwanese leader William Lai Ching-te, among others.
