11 injured in stabbing at Walmart in US, suspect in custody
At least 11 people are being treated for injuries after a stabbing Saturday at a Walmart store in the US state of Michigan, according to Munson Healthcare, as police confirmed a suspect is in custody.
“We can confirm that 11 victims are being treated at Munson Medical Center,” the hospital said in a statement, adding that the emergency department is handling “a higher-than-usual volume of patients.”
“Our thoughts are with all those affected by this event, and we are grateful to the first responders and law enforcement for their swift action,” it added.
The attack took place shortly after 5 pm (2100GMT) in Traverse City, prompting a large emergency response.
Michigan State Police described the situation as an “active incident” and urged the public to avoid the area.
“There is no danger to the public at this time,” authorities said. The Walmart and surrounding businesses were cordoned off as a precaution.
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation.
Witnesses said more than five people were injured and transported to a nearby hospital, though official figures were not initially confirmed.
Emergency crews remained at the scene late Saturday as officials continued their response and worked to gather additional details.
Local outlet UpNorthLive reported a heavy law enforcement presence in the area.
Traverse City is a small city located on the shores of Lake Michigan with a population of about 15,000.
