Messi's World Cup jerseys set for record-breaking auction
A collection of six jerseys worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's 2022 World Cup triumph is set to go under the hammer, with Sotheby's announcing the auction on Monday.

These iconic white-and-blue No. 10 jerseys could potentially break the record for the highest-priced sports memorabilia at a public auction, a title currently held by Diego Maradona's jersey from the 1986 World Cup, which fetched $9.3 million.
"These match-worn shirts are artifacts of Messi's legacy. They symbolize the culmination of a career marked by relentless dedication and a deep love for football," said the London-based auction house. "Messi's journey in the 2022 World Cup was more than a victory; it was about inspiring future generations of footballers and fans."
If Messi's jerseys exceed the $9.3 million benchmark, they would surpass the amount paid for Maradona’s iconic 1986 World Cup jersey, sold by Sotheby’s in May 2022. That jersey was part of the historic quarterfinal against England, where Maradona scored the controversial 'Hand of God' goal. He famously described it as "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God."
Argentina clinched their third World Cup title in 2022 after defeating France in a penalty shootout following a 3-3 draw at Doha's Lusail Stadium. Messi played a pivotal role, scoring twice in the final.
Established in 1744 in London, Sotheby’s will host the auction of Messi’s jerseys in New York this December. The jerseys will also be displayed at Sotheby's New York headquarters.
