Kuzey Tunçelli became the first Turkish swimmer to reach the final in the history of the Olympic Games. He recorded a time of 14:41.22, setting a new World Junior record.

American swimmer Bobby Finke broke the world record with a time of 14:30.67, winning the gold medal. Italian swimmer Gregorio Paltrinieri took home the silver medal.
