The first-ever "Cappadocia Desert Marathon" has commenced with a 30-kilometer course in the Goreme district of Nevsehir, in the Central Anatolia Region of Turkiye.
Approximately 300 runners from 42 countries have gathered to participate in this challenging race. The athletes spent the night in tents set up at the starting line in Kiliclar Valley, preparing for the race ahead.
With the starting whistle blown at 5:30 a.m. local time (0230GMT), the runners set off, traversing the picturesque valleys of Kiliclar, Gulludere, Kizilcukur, Ask, and Guvercinlik, all known for their stunning fairy chimneys. The race will conclude near the village of Cavusin.
Event organizer Cyril Gauthier expressed his best wishes to the participants during an interview with Anadolu.
"We have (previously) organized this desert marathon in Jordan, Egypt, and Morocco, and now we are thrilled to be in Cappadocia. The runners are delighted because this is a wonderful place. We are very happy to be here. The view was breathtaking with hot air balloons adding to the beauty of the run," Gauthier stated.
An award ceremony is scheduled to take place at 2:30 p.m. local time (1130GMT) in Goreme.
