Men cannot talk to women first in this bar
Dear Sailor, a unique cocktail bar inspired by 1930s Tokyo jazz bars and speakeasies, recently opened in Manchester's Spinningfields on November 24.

This establishment offers an array of sophisticated drinks but is distinguished by its comprehensive set of rules aimed at fostering respect among patrons.
The bar's guidelines include prohibitions on shouting, name-dropping, and bringing guests you wouldn't trust alone in your home. Men must remove their hats inside and refrain from introducing themselves to women they don't know. However, women can initiate conversations or ask a bartender for an introduction. If an unfamiliar man approaches a woman, she is advised to slightly lift her chin and ignore him.
Christian Coates, the co-owner, shared with the Manchester Evening News that while the rules are somewhat tongue-in-cheek, their primary goal is to promote mutual respect among customers and for the venue. He emphasized the expectation of a certain conduct from patrons, stating, "They will be ever-evolving, and there’s a few more to be added after this weekend. But rules are made to be broken too.”
Here are Dear Sailor's rules in full:
1. No name-dropping or seeking attention from celebrities.
2. No shouting or other loud behavior.
3. No fighting, play fighting, or discussions about fighting.
4. Gentlemen should remove their hats; hooks are available if needed.
5. Gentlemen should not approach women. Women may initiate conversations or request introductions through the bartender.
6. Avoid loitering outside the front door.
7. Remove shoes when dancing on furniture.
8. No sportswear or caps.
9. Only bring guests you trust alone in your home; you are responsible for their behavior.
10. Leave the bar quickly and quietly. Finalize travel plans and say farewells before exiting.
