“I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the brave people of Iraq on the successful completion of the recent parliamentary elections, a crucial step toward strengthening democracy and stability in the country,” Savaya said in an official letter published on US social media company X.

The US envoy also commended Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s government for ensuring a smooth and timely election process, saying the polls were “a clear sign that Iraq is moving toward greater prosperity and sovereignty.”

Affirming Washington’s commitment to supporting Iraq’s sovereignty and reform efforts, Savaya said the US is ready to work with the next Iraqi government to enhance “our strategic partnership” in security, energy, and development.

Iraq concluded parliamentary elections on Nov. 11, with a voter turnout of 56.11%.

Sudani’s Reconstruction and Development Coalition ranked first in nine provinces, including the capital, Baghdad. The premier said on Wednesday that he will soon begin negotiations to form a new government.

A total of 7,743 candidates contested the elections, including 2,247 women.

Shia parties and blocs hold a majority in the current legislature. Power in Iraq is traditionally divided among the country’s main communities: the presidency goes to the Kurds, the premiership to the Shias, and the speakership of parliament to the Sunnis.
