Japan says it scrambled military jets for 4 days after Chinese spy aircraft fly over East China Sea

According to the Japanese Joint Staff, China had deployed Y-9 aircraft from Thursday through Sunday off the Danjo Islands, west of Japan's southwestern main island of Kyushu, and off Okinawa's main island in the East China Sea.

There was no immediate response from Beijing to Tokyo's claim.

Tokyo confirmed there was no violation of Japanese airspace.

The development comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Tokyo and Beijing.

Separately, China's Foreign Ministry on Monday urged Japan to “earnestly fulfill its obligations and responsibilities at an early date and completely and thoroughly destroy all chemical weapons it abandoned in China.”

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning was responding to questions regarding a trip to China by officials of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, as well as senior diplomats from 12 countries.

During the visit, they traveled to Hunchun, Dunhua and Harbaling in Northeast China's Jilin province, Mao said.

"Through the visit, all parties gained a deeper understanding of the serious harm that Japan's abandoned chemical weapons have caused to the lives and property of the Chinese people and to the ecological environment," she added.
