Iran’s top security official warns region would 'go dark' if US strikes power grid

In a post on the US social media company X, Larijani said US President Donald Trump had claimed Washington could dismantle Iran’s electric capacity within an hour.

“Well, if they do that, the whole region will go dark in less than half an hour,” Larijani wrote, adding that the resulting blackout would create conditions to pursue US servicemen “running for safety.”

Trump earlier told reporters that the US could strike key infrastructure in Tehran and other locations, potentially destroying Iran’s electrical capacity.

“We can hit sections of Tehran and other places that, if you do it, it'll be almost impossible for them to rebuild their country, and we don't want that. We could take apart their electric capacity within one hour, and it would take them 25 years to rebuild it, so ideally we're not going to be doing that,” Trump said.

Regional tensions has escalated since the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran on Feb. 28, killing about 1,300 people and injuring more than 10,000 since Feb. 28.

Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
