The victory gave Democrats the 218 seats needed for a majority in the 435-member chamber, ending Republican control and dealing a major political setback to President Donald Trump. As of 0639GMT, 87 seats had yet to be called.

As of 0623GMT, 25 House seats were flipped by the Democratic Party, including three districts in California (the 1st, 3rd and 41st congressional districts), one in Colorado (the 8th), three in Iowa (the 1st, 2nd and 3rd), one in Indiana (the 5th), one in Kentucky (the 6th), one in Missouri (the 2nd), one in North Carolina (the 11th), one in Nebraska (the 2nd), one in New Jersey (the 7th), two in Ohio (the 7th and 15th), four in Pennsylvania (the 1st, 7th, 8th and 10th), two in Texas (the 15th and 23rd), one in Utah (the 1st), one in Virginia (the 2nd) and two in Wisconsin (the 1st and 3rd Congressional Districts).

The result will give Democrats the power to block Republican legislation and launch investigations into the Trump administration during the remaining two years of his presidency. Additionally, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is poised to become the first Black speaker of the House.

Republicans entered the elections with a narrow House majority that had helped Trump advance much of his legislative agenda since returning to the White House in January 2025.

Democrats campaigned heavily on the rising cost of living, the administration's immigration policies, and the war with Iran, seeking to capitalize on dissatisfaction with Trump's presidency.

The new Congress will convene in January 2027, when Democrats will be able to elect the House speaker and take control of the chamber's committees.
