Citing two US officials, The New York Times reported that the lone pilot of the A-10 Warthog was safely rescued.

The A-10 attack plane went down near the Strait of Hormuz at around the same time that an Air Force F-15E was shot down over Iran, the officials said, per the report.

Earlier, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt had told CNN that President Donald Trump had been briefed on a US fighter jet shot down over Iran, later identified as an F-15E Strike Eagle.

The Pentagon and US Central Command did not immediately respond to requests from Anadolu for comment.

Media reports citing US officials indicate that one of the F-15E crew members has been rescued and is undergoing medical treatment.

Search and rescue efforts for the second crew member, whose status is unknown, are underway.

According to reports, the F-15E is crewed by one pilot and one weapons systems officer.
